RUBY LEGS VAULT INTO LEAD; DEATH VALLEY, NASHVILLE HOLD ON
WORCESTER (CLP): The Worcester Ruby Legs opened a small edge over Boston as
they attempt to return to postseason play and avenge their 1967 loss in the
World Series. As they have been all season long, Jimmy Wynn (.279, 26 hr) and
Hawk Harrelson (.269, 32 hr) have been providing the offense, while Chris
Short (20-8, 2.62) heads the typically fine Worcester pitching staff. The
Rubies are in fairly good shape for the stretch run, although certain key
role players like Rocky Colavito (.291, 18 hr in 1745 ab!), Jim Pagliaroni
(.263) and veteran shortstop Dick Schofield (.227) are out for the season.
In Boston, the desperate lineup shuffling did manage to save the main starting
lineup for the Dead Sox, who mainly lost bit players thown to the wolves in
an attempt to save the at-bats of the likes of Reggie, Killer, and Rick Monday.
The biggest loss for Boston is Bill Monboquette (14-7, 2.98), who came on to
have a fine season for the team that originally signed him as a rookie. So
Boston will finally field once more the team that opened up a 5 game lead
to open the season. Can they close the 3.5 game gap against the Rubies in
September?
The CL Central finally bids farewell to Nashville's Gates Brown (.319, 16 hr)
but not the starting rotation of Nash (14-5, 1.75), Veale (20-6, 1.87), McLain
(20-11, 2.26) and Gibson (22-11, 2.69), clearly making a run at being the
finest in the history of the CL. Other than Gates and bit player Frank
Kostro, the Metros enter the stretch run unscathed. Philadelphia leads the
wild card hunt and is only 5.5 back of Nashville, and the Liberty don't lose
anyone to overuse. With Pete Rose (.348, 82 rbi) way ahead in the batting
title and Willie Mays (.276, 24 hr) providing his veteran leadership, Philly
should be in good position for postseason play. If it becomes a Boston-
Philly wild card race, it is worth noting that the Eastern division features
four severely depleted teams, while the Central only has two such teams to
feast upon.
In the West, Death Valley has opened a six game margin over Orlando but enters
the stretch run with 7 position players and 5 pitchers. Gone are Richie Allen
(.252, 33 hr) and John Callison (.230, 19 hr), as well as Roy Face (7-3, 1.84,
9 sv) and Claude Raymond (3.21, 10 sv), who constituted the entire Monster
bullpen. Can the Monsters replace these missing parts well enough to stay
ahead of the pursuit? Orlando loses Bob Bolin (15-9, 2.21) and Tom Murphy
(9-3, 162 with ORL) out of the rotation, as well as some role players like
Dick Green, Clete Boyer, and Ron Swoboda. Baton Rouge loses Ray Washburn
(18-12, 2.89), Andy Messersmith (12-4, 2.02) and a number of offensive parts,
most notably Mack Jones (.245, 30 hr). Melbourne Beach had a disappointing
August and has dropped 15 games off the pace with 24 to play, but enters the
stretch run as the healthiest of the top four squads. Can they close the gap?
One thing is likely--the spread between these four teams at seasons end will
probably be much smaller than it is right now, unless some dramatic trades
are made.

defeated the Worcester Ruby Legs by a score of 5 to 0 at Turner Field.
It was a good day for Nashville thanks to Johnny Bench. He doubled in the 1st
inning, doubled bringing in two baserunners in the 6th inning and popped a
two-run clout over the fence (his 14th of the season) in the 8th inning.
Nashville out-hit Worcester for the game, 8 hits to 2.
The victory went to Veale(20-6) who went 6 innings, allowing no runs. Veale
got relief help from Denny Higgins who gained credit for his 3rd save. Stan

Catcher Duke Sims hit 2 doubles and had 2 RBI at Boston where the Allentown
Allnighters beat the Boston Dead Sox 9 to 5.
Allentown jumped out to the early lead in the first inning when they tallied 2
runs on 3 hits. The big moment was provided by Joe Pepitone who helped quiet
the crowd when he laced a one-base hit which was good for two runs.
Allentown finished with 18 hits while Boston ended up with 8.
Wally Bunker(10-8) got the win allowing 4 runs in 5 and 2/3 innings. Jim
Grant(2-2) absorbed the loss. Allentown extended their winning streak to 6

In a two run game the Northbrook Atoms got by the Baton Rouge Red Sticks by
the score of 5 to 3.
Northbrook took the lead for good in the top of the 5th inning scoring one
runner on 2 hits. For the game Northbrook out-hit Baton Rouge 13 to 9.
Camilo Pascual(11-17) went 8 and 1/3 innings allowing 3 runs for the win.
Pascual was helped out by Hoyt Wilhelm who recorded his 31st save. Larry
Jackson(14-12) was hit with the loss.
With this win, Northbrook has a 53-85 record. They have been 6-4 lately.
With the loss, Baton Rouge has a record of 6-4 lately, 79-59 overall.
THREE TIGHT RACES HEAD INTO AUGUST!
In recent years, at least one CL race has gone down to the wire, and for this
1968 year of the pitcher, it looks like all three divisions might go that
way! Where to begin?
The two best records in the CL belong to the two Central Division leaders.
Both Nashville and Philadelphia stood pat during the All Star break trading
frenzy, apparently figuring that there was no need to tamper with the
success that both teams have been experiencing. Nashville has the top team
ERA and BA in the league, while Philly is #2 in both areas. The Metro
rotation of Bob Gibson (18-7, 2.63), Denny McLain (16-7, 2.05), Jim Nash
(13-3, 1.66), and Bob Veale (15-4, 1.91) speaks for itself--is it the
best in league history? And Gates Brown (.330, 12 hr) is not the only
weapon in a lineup that includes Oliva, Bench and Perez. Brown will be
history come game 140, but none of the Metro rotation is in jeopardy.
Unfortunately for Nashville, Philly looks quite healthy heading into
the dog days of August, and Carlton, Bahnsen, and Chance might all win
25 games. Willie Mays is having a great time driving in batting leader
Pete Rose, and the Liberty are running on all cylinders. With only
three games separating the two, losing Brown will hurt the Metros. Both
teams will likely make the postseason at their current pace, but who will
end up with the pennant is by no means settled.
Nor do they look to be settled anytime soon in the East. Worcester was
wheeling and dealing during the break, and new pickups Ron Kline (0.56,
4 sv) and Al Jackson (2-1, 1.08) have had an immediate impact on the
bullpen. The Rubies have now drawn even with Boston, who acquired a
few bodies including the ancient Eddie Mathews (.211, 2 hr) in a
desperate attempt to deal with severe usage problems. For the Dead Sox,
the good news is that they've managed to stay even with Worcester while
attempting to rest key players for a stretch run. The bad news is that
the resting has only been partially successful, and many of the more
famous names on the Dead Sox--Killebrew, Reggie, Monday, Maloney--are
in danger of game 140 expiration. Any more rest for these players may
leave Boston too far out of contention to worry about any stretch run.
And then there's the wild West, where six games separate five teams.
Death Valley continues to ride at the top of the heap, but things
could be hot and dry for this team come game 140; the Monsters only
sport 10 position players and 7 pitchers, and it's a guarantee that
they won't all be around at the end of the season. With four teams
breathing down their scaly necks, the Monsters can't afford a misstep.
Baton Rouge is only 2 back, but a couple of their pleasant surprises,
like Mack Jones (.242, 26 hr) and Dick Dietz (.248, 15 hr) are out
for the stretch. The defending pennant winners in Orlando shocked
everyone by unloading Willie McCovey, their top run producer, but
pickups like Tom Murphy (5-1, 0.52), Jim Northrup (.333, 26 rbi in
96 ab) and Jim Fregosi (.326) are picking up the slack nicely, so
the Geckos are only 2.5 games behind their larger lizard brothers.
And Melbourne Beach spent big on Alou, Charles and Allison, and
they've gained 5 games on the leaders in the past 30 to hover 5
back. Add Buffalo, still in the hunt at 6 back, and just about
anyone (except the struggling Atoms) can still take this division!

METROS SURGE, DEAD SOX FALTER AS CL HITS ALL-STAR BREAK
The Nashville Metropolitans pulled to a five-game lead over Philadelphia to
climb to the CL's top record at the All-Star break, placing their entire
rotation on the All-Star team. Led by Gibson (13-6, 2.51) and McLain (13-5,
2.54), the Metros have been holding opposition hitters at bay while All-Star
backups Bench, Perez and Beckert generate runs and Gates Brown (who at .337
would be leading the league but does not have enough atbats to qualify)
continues to mash the ball with regularity. Philadelphia is betting on Pete
Rose to keep them in the lead for the wildcard slot, although there is
likely to be some competition from the East.
And in the East, there is also competition for a pennant as Boston slumped
during June, partially due to efforts to rest some aching personnel such
as Harmon Killebrew. With the drop, Worcester is just a few percentage points
behind as Hawk Harrelson (.290, 20 hr, 51 rbis) enjoys a great first half
and Chris Short (11-4, 2.13) is again putting up Cy Young numbers. These
teams figure to go neck and neck for the remainder of the season.
In the West, Death Valley contniues to hold an edge with three other teams
each struggling to emerge as the Monster's main competition. The big news
in the Valley has been the performance of Sudden Sam McDowell, overshadowing
even the big duo in Nashville with his 13-6, 2.27 numbers, and of Frank
Howard, leading the league in homers and rbis. However, the Monsters, like
Boston, have usage problems as well as the lead, meaning that something will
need to be done by both squads during this trading session to prevent a late-
season swoon.
In other news, look for the 1967 CL World Series to be broadcast live from
the CL chat room this Tuesday night at roughly 9:00 pm Central time!
Anchorage and Worcester are returning to Anchorage to play Game 6 with the
Attack holding a 3-2 edge. Don't miss it!

NASHVILLE, PHILLY SET FOR CLASSIC DUEL
NASHVILLE (CLP): Although Allentown has dominated the CL Central in recent
seasons, it doesn't take much digging to find a time when Nashville and
Philadelphia were the dominant forces in this division. And with the
Allnighters sinking towards mediocrity after some big selloffs, the door
was left open for the Metros and the Liberty to step in. One game
separates these two old rivals, with the Liberty relying upon young Pete
Rose to produce runs (at a higher rate than the touted outfield of Mays,
Clemente, and Robinson) and Dean Chance (5-3, 2.53) and rookie Stan
Bahnsen (8-2, 2.92) seemingly alternating starts. Nashville has been
waiting for the exploits of Gates Brown (.473/.609 OBP/SLG) for some
time, but Bob Gibson (5-4, 2.70) doesn't seem to have found his peak
form yet. If he does, the Metros may expand their one game margin,
but it looks like a two-team horse race in the Central.
The West has three teams within 4 games, as Death Valley has leapfrogged
over the opposition into first place. For the Monsters, it's Sudden
Sam (7-3, 2.42) on the mound and Hondo Howard (.286, 14 hr) that provide
the spark. Orlando is two back in their quest to repeat as division
winners, as Willie McCovey (.258, 12 hrs) tries to galvanize an offense
that is hitting only .237 as a team. Baton Rouge is hanging in third
place, with the performance of veteran free agent Ken Boyer (.312, 23
rbi) being a pleasant surprise for the offense.
In the East, Boston has amassed the CL's top record thanks mainly to
MVP candidate Henry Aaron (.386, 14 hr, 44 rbi), who is currently leading
the league in all Triple Crown categories. With Killer hampered by
injuries, young Reggie Jackson (.280, 10 hr) has been thrilling the
Fenway faithful with long homers and big strikeouts. Worcester remains
within striking distance at five back, with Hawk Harrelson (.286, 8 hr)
leading a balanced offense and Chris Short (5-3, 2.31) cementing his
place as the staff ace.
Interesting boxes attached!
